Detail information about job Research Assistant / Associate in Multispectral Polarization-Resolved Endoscopy and Vision. Terms and conditions vacancy

Salary:

£32,380 - £34,040 per annum (Research Assistant)

£36,800 - £37,760 per annum (Research Associate)

Campus: South Kensington

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant (at the pre-doctoral level) or Research Associate (at the post-doctoral level) to work on a collaborative project on “Multispectral polarization-resolved endoscopy and vision” in the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery and the Division of Surgery, in collaboration with University College London. The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The aim of this project is to develop the emerging modality of Polarization-Resolved Endoscopy (PRE), which we have shown can provide useful live image guidance during surgeries. However, understanding the polarization resolved image contrast mechanisms requires us to further develop the fundamental understanding of the polarized light-tissue interaction as well as exploring the clinical interpretation of the underlying biological mechanisms in the context of endoscopic imaging. This position will involve the development of novel endoscopic devices, as well as a clinical evaluation for peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC). It will be complemented by research jointly with UCL to develop new theory, algorithms and computationally efficient software to analyse the results. The project outcomes can have significant impact on biomedical science and clinical practice:

  • Full Mueller matrix endoscopy device for high resolution tissue image database acquisition;
  • Multispectral (three band) PRE with circular polarization for rapid Stokes’ vector imaging of tissue for clinical image acquisition;
  • Modelling of tissue- and patient-specific polarized light-tissue interaction using real-time information about surface geometry and tissue type classification to fit model parameters;
  • Improved understanding of the role of surface structure and haemoglobin content on PRE image formation and the mechanisms to separate reflectance components and tissue albedo;
  • Characterisation of tissues based on vascularity, anisotropic structure alignment and textural vision properties recovered though imaging and linked to learned prior models;
  • Evaluation of surgical guidance during investigation of peritoneal diseases such as PC with varied pathologies.

The position involves significant R&D challenges based around the construction of polarization-resolved optical endoscope instruments that are able to image tissues in vivo during surgery. The end results will contribute to clinical research including cancer staging, minimally invasive surgery, interventional imaging, and the development of molecular imaging techniques. The translational work will involve close collaboration with a clinical team based at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.

You will need to have a strong engineering or physical sciences background (preferably photonics/ optical/ laser physics). Research Assistant applicants will have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the subject area and Research Associate applicants will have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the subject area. You should have proven knowledge and track record in this research field. You must have excellent communication skills and be able to organise your own work with minimal supervision and prioritise work to meet deadlines. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record and publications in the relevant area

The post is full time and fixed term until 31 August 2020.
