Detail information about job Ranger, Operations, Franz Josef. Terms and conditions vacancy

  • We have a vacancy for a Ranger in our Recreation and Historic team
  • Permanent, full-time role

Are you someone who loves the outdoors, and is passionate about recreation opportunities in New Zealand?  If you love working in the outdoors, appreciate a remote natural environment, and have good practical field skills with a proven ability for working in a small team, then this is the ranger job for you!

We have a vacancy for a Ranger in our Recreation and Historic team in South Westland (based in Franz Josef Glacier).   The South Westland area encompasses some 800,000 ha of public conservation land. A significant proportion of this is Te Wāhipounamu South West New Zealand World Heritage Area and includes such gems as Okarito (kayak trail, wharf shed and trig walk), Monro Beach (penguin viewing) and the icon sites of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, Lake Matheson and Ship Creek.

In South Westland we pride ourselves on the quality and range of tourism and recreation assets we manage. The recreation portfolio ranges from backcountry huts and tracks used predominantly for hunting tahr, chamois and deer, to campsites beside pristine lakes or wild remote west coast beaches, to the internationally famous hot pools in the Copland valley close to Welcome Flat Hut.

The stunning natural terrain requires a particular understanding of hazard and visitor safety management. For example, managing the safety of visitors to the dynamic glacier valleys is a critical component for the South Westland Recreation and Historic team.

Your day to day work will take you across South Westland carrying out recreation and historic based work programmes on and off public conservation land, according to work plans.

Some rostered weekend work will be required.

This Ranger position is pivotal to the operations of the DOC team in South Westland.  We need someone who is an effective team player and good communicator, with a passion for the outdoors and enthusiasm for working with others to highlight the recreation opportunities in South Westland. The ranger role is critical to achieving work in the field, so strong practical skill set is necessary, including maintenance and care for small plant and machinery, good basic building/carpentry skills, and the aptitude for toilet cleaning. A full, clean drivers licence and experience with trailers is essential.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
