New Zealanders need to have trust and confidence in the way their information is being managed and used by Government agencies, particularly as more and more and more citizens interact with Government digitally.

  • Are you looking for a system-wide leadership opportunity?
  • Do you want to make a major contribution to ensuring trusted public services for all New Zealanders?

The Government Chief Privacy Officer (GCPO) works closely with the Government Chief Digital Officer, and is part of the Service and System Transformation branch in the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA).

DIA is at the forefront of Government Digital Transformation. Whether it's improving the digital experience for New Zealanders, working with leaders to shape the digital agenda or providing guidance and support in digital best practice, our work really does impact the life of every New Zealander.

As the GCPO you will lead, engage and influence across the State sector, to ensure New Zealanders’ privacy remains a high priority.

You will provide a focal point for privacy standards and advice across the State sector in order to build and maintain public trust and confidence in the government's ability to manage personal information.

Leading a team of Advisors, you will be responsible for leading an uplift in capability by:

  • Providing leadership by setting the vision for privacy across government including developing,  informing and influencing all-of-government on privacy standards and guidelines;
  • Building capability by supporting agencies to meet their privacy responsibilities;
  • Delivering advice and assurance to Ministers and the Government Chief Digital Officer (GCDO) on public sector performance in terms of privacy, and
  • Facilitating system-wide rather than agency-by-agency engagement.

You will have extensive leadership experience, preferably in the State sector, demonstrated ability to influence others and exceptional interpersonal and relationship management skills. An understanding of how government operates is required along with a sound knowledge of privacy legislation and security and information management practices.
