Northumbria University is a thriving, research-rich university with a global reputation for academic excellence and a clear and ambitious vision. The University was the UK’s largest riser in research power in REF 2014. The Department of Humanities made a significant contribution to that rise, including through its REF submission. The University also has the highest level of student entry qualifications of any modern university, in addition to exceptionally strong student satisfaction rates. We are also persuing high-performing collaborations and partnerships at home and overseas for research and impact purposes.

English Language and Linguistics is part of the Department of Humanities, which is also the home of the Institute of Humanitites, as well as the Humanities Multidisciplinary Research Theme (MDRT). The Humanities MDRT brings together research-active staff from the disciplines of Art History, American Studies, Creative Writing, English Language and Linguistics, English Literature, Media Studies and History. We are particularly interested in political formation and identity; cultures of memory, commemoration and heritage; impulses towards settlement and diaspora; forms of artistic and creative expression; and responses to natural and built environments.

The University is seeking to support its research strength in the Department with the appointment of a  Professor or Associate Professor in English Language and Linguistics. We invite applications from outstanding academic leaders with an international research profile in English Language and Linguistics to provide strategic direction and vision for the further development of research in the English Language and Linguistics subject group. Prospective candidates with specialisms including, but not limited to: Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Educational Linguistics, Historical Linguistics, Language Variation and Change, Sociolinguistics, Theoretical Linguistics and TESOL are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will lead, grow and develop the research profile of English Language and Linguistics at Northumbria, in line with our REF success and the University Vision. You will make a strong personal contribution to the academic profile of the Department and Faculty through your contribution to research, impact and teaching. Your ability to think and act strategically, adapting to the changing external environment, is key to success in this role. A successful record of leadership in research is essential.

For an informal discussion about this opportunity, please contact Prof David Walker, Head of English, Department of Humanities, at [email protected]
