We are seeking to employ a Research Associate within the School of Materials on a full time basis. The post is fixed term for a period of 24 months commencing 01 October 2017.

The goal of this EPSRC/BP funded research project is to provide a step change in the mechanistic understanding of the evolution of corrosion scales formed in sweet/sour dissolved CO2/H2S oilfield environments.

More specifically, effort will focus on characterising scale precursors and nucleation processes. Scale precursor structure and chemistry will be probed with UHV-SPM STM/AFM  and NAP-XPS, respectively. In situ  solid/liquid interface SPM work will be conducted in CO2/H2S containing aqueous solutions to directly image scale nucleation dynamics. In addition, further characterization will be undertaken with SR based probes, including exploiting the high spatial resolution of beam lines I08 and I14 at Diamond to gain insight into interfacial heterogeneity during scale initiation

You will be expected to conduct UHV-SPM and NAP-XPS measurements, as well as in situ SPM. Besides working in Manchester, time will be spent using synchrotron radiation sources. It is also expected that they will assist with the supervision of research students, produce reports and presentations for project meetings with BP, as well as writing manuscripts for publication.

The School of Materials is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting women’s careers in STEMM subjects science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine in higher education. The School received a Bronze Award in 2013 for their commitment to the representation of women in the workplace and we particularly welcome applications from women for this post. Appointment will always be made on merit. For further information, please visithttp://www.materials.manchester.ac.uk/about-us/athena-swan/
