Detail information about job Research Assistant. Terms and conditions vacancy

Salary: £28,936 to £32,458 per annum (pro rata if part time), together with USS pension benefits if required.

This is a fixed term position funded by EPSRC for the period from 1st October 2017 to 31st August 2018

This post will support the HI-PROSPECT (Hi resolution Printing of Solar Photovoltaic Electrode Structures) project which is a Innovate funded collaborative R&D project between PVI, Intrinsiq materials, NSG, Queen Mary college, Johnson Matthey and UCL. The overall objective of the project is to develop a new front electrode technology for PV cells which allows high conductivity and transparency without the use of ITO. The conductivity is achieved by depositing a grid of fine (5 micron) lines of nano copper using an electro static jet technology (ESJET) developed by PVI and Queen Mary College.

Swansea University has 3 primary roles in the project. The first is to provide design criteria for the patterning of the grid such that the optimum conductivity and light transmission can be obtained. This is to be achieved by numerical modelling in conjunction with experimental validation. The second is to provide PV characterization of the printed grid structures and to examine changes in performance with cells life.

The third aspect is to develop the ESJET equipment such that it is capable of depositing over a 50 x 50 cm glass surface. The detailed design and installation of this equipment is the primary function of this role. This will require close collaboration with industry partners to develop the necessary design specification, design implementation and characterization methods. Further information on the role of Swansea University within the project can be found at http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N509905/1

Main Duties are:

  • Design, build and install the large area ESJet technology demonstrating equipment in the SPECIFIC cleanroom in Baglan (PMRC).
  • Commission the ESJet technology demonstrating equipment.
  • Carry out parametric studies of the impact of material and operational parameters on the jetting and print characteristics ESJet equipment.
  • Work closely with industrial and academic partners to ensure that project milestones are met and progress is maintained in accordance with the agreed plan
  • Presentation of the results of this work both internally and externally, including as oral presentation and written reports and publications.
  • To assist postgraduate students and other research staff working in the field.

Applicants must have A degree in engineering or a related physical science subject, or a post graduate degree in engineering or a related physical science subject, and evidence of the ability to actively engage in and contribute to writing and publishing research papers, particularly for refereed journals.
