We have a rare and exciting position at Walkinshaw Racing for an experienced Technical Engineering Manager based in Clayton, Melbourne.

You will require a high level of flexibility in approach and hours including week-ends, along with a “can do”, “team playing” attitude is a must, as is the ability to work under minimal supervision in a high pressurised environment, whilst adhering to strict guidelines.

Job Function

The role of Technical Engineering Manager is to manage the Engineering Group by planning, organising, directing, controlling and coordinating the engineering and technical operations of this racing business.

You will focus on the performance of the vehicles and assist with the general operation of the Engineering Group in line with the workload and general business procedures as established by the Shareholders and Senior Management.

The role will require significant focus on Design and development of Engineering tools, including the direction and approval of work completed by other engineering staff.

The goals are to achieve race results that subsequently lead to Driver’s and Team’s Championships.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Determine, implement and monitor engineering strategies, policies and plans.
  • Ensuring conformity with specifications and plans, and with laws, regulations and safety standards.
  • Focusing on continual improvement in performance and reliability of the Race Vehicles with an overall objective to achieve Driver’s Championships and Team’s Championships.
  • Completion of design tasks from concept to implementation.
  • Oversee design task projects and general Research and Development, including interaction and leadership of other Engineering Staff.
  • At all times, designing components that are safe to Drivers and Team Members, reliable and meet any regulatory requirements as dictated by the Supercar, Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) and Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) regulations as distributed for each year of competition.
  • Requirement to travel, Domestically and Internationally and participate at and during race meets, events and ride days as well as any other non-race track related activity etc.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Engineering Degree in Automotive or Mechanical or equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience as a Technical Engineering Manager or equivalent senior role within a professional Race Team
  • Minimum 10 Years’ experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods and CAD Management. Prior experience with Siemens Unigraphics (UG) software is an advantage.
  • Advanced knowledge of race car Aerodynamics with experience of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Wind Tunnel Testing for vehicle design and development
  • Knowledge and experience with Vehicle Dynamics Simulation methods for vehicle design and development. Prior experience with Vi Grade software is a distinct advantage
  • Proven experience in the role of Race Engineer and Data Engineering with an aptitude for Data driven solutions.
  • Excellent skills in the use of MS Office Suite along with programming skills using languages such as VBA, Python, ASP.Net an advantage.
  • Experience with vehicle data systems, sensor selection and configurations required. Writing of control strategies and fail safes an advantage.
  • Natural leader of people, with excellent managerial and motivational skills. Previous leadership of engineering groups in high pressure environments and advantage.

The successful candidate will be a highly capable engineer that is degree qualified in an appropriate field, with significant experience and a background in Touring Car style Motorsport categories and other top end motorsports.
