About the Position

To provide professional advice to Council on statutory approvals, development standards, flooding and stormwater matters and Operational Works applications. Assist in assessing the suitability of proposed developments with particular emphasis on the hydraulic and stormwater management issues associated with the City’s extensive waterway and flood plain systems.

Key Deliverables of the position:

  • Assess development applications for compliance with Council’s Standard Specifications and Land Development Guidelines with respect to stormwater, water quality and flooding issues.
  • Preparation of reports/memos for Council’s planner on matters relating to floods and stormwater management in relation to development application assessment.
  • Provide technical advice to internal and external clients on matters relating to flooding and stormwater management (quantity and quality).
  • Attend meetings to provide advice or clarification on Council’s standards and requirements with respect to stormwater and floodplain management.
  • Ensure the quality, timeliness and consistency of DA assessment advice and information is developed and maintained.

Technical Capability

  • Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering with eligibility for membership with the Institution of Engineers Australia.
  • Postgraduate qualification(s) in hydrology, hydraulics, water engineering, or environmental engineering, including working experience in hydraulic engineering is highly desirable.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of various computer modelling techniques and packages on 1D and 2D hydraulic modelling, hydrologic modelling and stormwater.
  • An awareness of general environmental planning and best management practices with regards to stormwater management, flooding and hydraulic conveyance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) principles and their use in urban development.
  • An understanding of a development assessment role.

  • Well-developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present and articulate complex/technical matters.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and productively within a multi-disciplinary team environment and foster good relationships with employees and clients.
  • Ability to plan, organise and prioritise work.
