Digital water metering has emerged as an exciting IoT application and Australian utilities are actively preparing for volume deployment.

Aquiba designs and manufactures state of the art digital water meters with integrated LPWAN / cellular radio connectivity and a proprietary flow sensor. 

Aquiba’s product development team is based in Sunshine Coast Australia and has a dedicated manufacturing team based in Japan.

This position will appeal to you if you are seeking a real technical challenge and are looking for an opportunity to take the lead in the design and optimization of advanced electronic products in an exciting new space.

You will be working on projects to integrate the latest ISM and cellular radio technologies, interface proprietary high precision sensor technologies, optimize signal processing algorithms, squeeze the power budgets and delivery robust operation of extended operational lifetimes (>15years).

The Aquiba platform operates a highly sophisticated custom operating system tailored for low power and high reliability operation.  To succeed you will need a solid foundation across all aspects of embedded firmware design in a commercial environment and experience managing small agile development teams. You will be expected to:
 

  • Lead firmware team to deliver high-quality embedded C and assembler code

  • Dive in and take ownership for critical design issues

  • Taken a lead the overall platform architecture design

  • Refine and implement firmware development process, policies and systems

  • Actively contribute and collaborate with multi-disciplinary design team
     

Aquiba's digital water meters are in early release and proof of concept trials and there is an opportunity to make a real contribution to the next phase of development as we expanding product lines and move into higher volume production.
 

From an operational and delivery perspective, the Lead Firmware Engineer will:

The Aquiba platform operates a highly sophisticated custom operating system tailored for low power and high reliability operation.  To succeed you will need a solid foundation across all aspects of embedded firmware design in a commercial environment.  You will be expected to:

  • Leadership and line management of small firmware development and testing team.

  • Roll up sleeves and actively contribute to the development world class firmware to maximise product performance and reliability.

    • deliver high-quality embedded C and assembler code.

    • efficiently profile, test and debug new embedded functionality

    • dive in and take ownership for critical design issues.

    • proactively contribute to overall platform architecture design.

  • Manage Firmware through full life-cycle

    • Proof of concept development

    • Implementation and V&V

    • Defect tracking

    • Release processes and documentation

  • Rigorously support development and implementation of practical policy, process and systems to support the firmware design function.

  • Champion project initiatives to ensure that development milestones and deadlines are met.

  • Collaborate with the design, production and management teams to:

    • identify opportunities for product and system level enhancements.

    • explore technical feasibility for future products, design optimizations and features.

  • Attend technical and industry conferences and events to support the identification of new technologies, tools and development techniques applicable to the Aquiba business.
     

To be successful in this role you will have extensive experience in Firmware Design. You will have experience across the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science discipline (preferably Honors or higher degree).

  • Coordinating and managing a high calibre software/firmware development team.

  • Deep understanding of the operation and nuances of the C programming language.

  • Rock solid grounding in the operation of the tool chain and how to optimize (IDE, complier, linker, make files).

  • Deep understanding on the operation of 32-bit microprocessor hardware.

  • Fluent in C and assembler for embedded systems.

  • Fluent in Atlassian tools stack (Confluence, Jira) and SVN code repositories.

  • Integrating low power ISM and cellular radio technologies.

  • Interfacing real world sensors and deterministic and high reliability design concepts.

  • Bare metal embedded design.

  • Regression testing and code release processes.

  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to read schematics, datasheets and use electronic test equipment.

  • Excellent time management and task prioritization.

  • Of interest would be additional experience around the below:

    • Battery powered operation.

    • Industrial / high reliability product development

    • Sensor based algorithm development and digital signal processing.

    • Keil uVision development environment.

    • Experience in Quality Assured organisations (ISO9001).
