North East Citizen Advocacy Inc (NECA) is a community based not-for-profit that seeks to uphold the rights and interests of adults with an intellectual disability through advocacy.
We are looking for an enthusiastic person to work 18 hours per week, for a contract period of 12 months, to deliver NECA's Individual Disability Advocacy program to the North Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Role will commence as of August 2018.
The Individual Disability Advocate will respond to a variety of advocacy issues including, but not limited to, NDIS, housing, financial, employment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work one-to-one to provide advocacy to people with a disability and/or carers.
- To support and undertake specific tasks/roles as directed by the Program Manager
- Work to the standards of NECA's quality framework and purpose.
- Provide advice on strategy, policy and priorities relating to the provision of the Individual Disability Program.
- Develop and implement initiatives to promote the program, using various methods to maximise the reach within the community.
- Develop and maintain strong, productive and respectful relationships with internal and external stakeholders and with participants to ensure the respective rights of people with a disability are heard and respected.
- Provide scheduled reports to the Program Manager on the progress and status of the Individual Disability Program.
- Support and assist in the delivery and administration of other advocacy programs at NECA as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA
- Knowledge and experience in supporting members of the community who have disabilities or are disadvantaged.
- Knowledge and experience with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
- Knowledge and understanding various roles of advocacy.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to be self-directive and deliver on priorities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to human rights, understanding of the relevant legislation affecting disability.
- A willingness to work flexible hours as required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate with people across all levels of the organisation and community and build collaborative relationships with a range of stakeholders, including participants needing individual advocacy.
- Proven experience to work autonomously and making complex decisions to meet deadlines.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & KEY ATTRIBUTES
Essential:
- Qualifications and/or demonstrated experience relevant to individual disability advocacy
- Victorian Driver's Licence
- Demonstrated leadership skills and program delivery experience
- Strong communication skills with an ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of people and organisations
- High level of organisational capability, able to effectively prioritise, manage self and deliver against plans and targets
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice
- Experience in working with people who are disadvantaged or have an intellectual disability
Desirable
- Competency in MS Office programs
- Qualifications and/or demonstrated experience in Quality Management or Project Management
