The Opportunity
This position is a part of a large international project Bayesian ARgumentation via Delphi (BARD), aimed at using Bayesian network technology in argument analysis, within the large CREATE (Crowdsourcing Evidence, Argumentation, Thinking and Evaluation) R&D program run by the US government's IARPA. BARD is a consortium led by Monash and including external research teams at Birkbeck College University of London, University College London and Strathclyde University. The CREATE projects (there are three others) commenced in 2017 and are intended to run for 4.5 years in total, but is funded in three phases, with progression to subsequent phases dependent on meeting research outcomes each phase.
Reporting to the Lead CI (Chief Investigator), the Senior Research Fellow will be the BARD Project Research Manager and will have a primary responsibility of driving the research outcomes of the BARD project to ensure that these outcomes reflect the goals of the project. This will be achieved by working with each of the research teams (20 permanent staff along with casual and contract staff) and coordinating their research output across the BARD Project. Frequent and effective communications between the research teams and other internal BARD teams will be critical to the success of this role. Some travel to the UK will be required.
The Research Manager will work closely with both the design team lead and the technical manager to ensure experimentation and product realisation are both in alignment with the vision of BARD. The Research Manager’s focus will be on achieving the experimental aims of the project while the Technical Manager will focus on achieving the product aims of the project. The design team provides design guidance to both streams.
The main research efforts within BARD are:
- designing new means of interacting with and using Bayesian networks for analysing problems in intelligence analysis
- designing new means of analysing and explaining Bayesian network models
- designing and analysing human experiments using BARD tools
The Senior Research Fellow will also contribute to the research and experimental work of individual BARD Teams as appropriate and help to communicate the progress and achievements of the Project to IARPA and the academic community.
The successful candidate will have a doctoral qualification in Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive or Social Psychology, Philosophy of Argumentation or equivalent accreditation and standing together with subsequent research experience, along with experience in successfully managing research staff and leading large research teams.
