Economic Forecasting and Revenue Analysis Division

The Team:

The Economic Forecasting and Modelling Branch and the Revenue Forecasting Branch are responsible for economic and revenue forecasting, macroeconomic analysis, economic modelling and the assessment of long- term fiscal pressures. They operate within the Economic Forecasting Revenue Analysis Division, which provides high quality, data driven advice to Government on its economic and revenue outlook as well as macroeconomic and revenue trends. 

The Role: 

There are currently positions available in the Economic Forecasting and Modelling Branch and the Revenue Forecasting and Analysis Branch. As an Economist in one of these teams, you will contribute to the delivery of high quality advice and analysis to support Government decision making. You will advise on economic and revenue developments and prospects, conduct quantitative research, and produce high quality analysis across a diverse range of policy areas. 

Key Accountabilities: 

  • Contribute to quantitative research and analysis to support sound advice on the economic and/or revenue outlook.
  • Support the development of high quality advice and clear recommendations to senior management and the Treasurer, on issues such as the economic outlook, Budget measures and Commonwealth funding.
  • Draw on a wide variety of data to develop robust and consistent economic and revenue forecasts using research tools and forecasting techniques such as data analysis and econometric models.
  • Support the provision of expert qualitative analysis and advice that integrates relevant input from sources internal and external to the department, and considers the broader policy and operating environment.
  • Communicate effectively to build strong relationships with our clients, across the department and the NSW Government.

Key Skills and Experience: 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Economics/Statistics/Public Policy and/or relevant experience. Experience in providing policy advice and/or economic analysis in a data driven environment with a strong customer focus.
  • Ability to analyse data, use models and apply critical perspectives across diverse policy issues and draw inferences to support policy advice and/or economic and revenue forecasts.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines and work collaboratively.
  • Sound communication skills that allow you to clearly convey technical and complex information and analysis (verbal, written and visual) in a form that is appropriate to the audience and its purpose.
  • Experience in using software (e.g. Excel, Eviews, RStudio, STATA) to analyse data and build models to support policy advice and forecasts would be an advantage.
