  • We are looking for a Senior Field Science Leader
  • Manage work and teams in the lab and the field, collecting forest data and sampling soil and foliage
  • Full time permanent position at Scion's Rotorua campus.

Scion is working to sustainably increase forest productivity to maximise the value and profitability of the forestry industry in New Zealand. Forestry is New Zealand's third largest primary export and the industry is working towards doubling its export earnings by 2022. This will boost regional and national economies and bring environmental benefits. In this role you will be assisting with design establishment and assessing experimental forest research trials.

Key activities will include:

  • Actively carrying out technical field work related to the preparation and establishment of experimental field research trials to support forest productivity.
  • Providing general technical field work assistance including the measurement, assessment and survey/maintenance of a wide range of field trials
  • Maintenance of field trial sites
  • Providing scheduling and management of work programmes and staff
  • Providing training and mentorship for new and junior field technicians as required
  • Review of Standard operating procedures
  • Data collection and entry including the updating of research trial databases

What are we looking for? A motivated, practical individual who is passionate about working outdoors and who is interested in providing guidance to a team. In addition you will have:

  • Experience in the management of field trials,
  • Experience in undertaking field work or forest assessments, forest mensuration skills and/or a general forest science/ecology background is preferred.
  • An ability to work independently and proactively with a range of science and technical staff.
  • An ability to work in remote, rugged and not easily accessed environments.
  • A knowledge of ArcGis software

At a personal level you must be practical, meticulous and diligent with an ability to stay focused on sometimes repetitive tasks. Above all else, you will have high levels of self-motivation and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. This role will involve work in the field so holding a valid full drivers licence is essential (4 x 4 skills is an advantage). A willingness to undertake training in chainsaw use is desirable.
