About the business

Speech NZ was set up over 50 years ago. It is a registered Charity and New Zealand's Speech and Drama Examination Board. It appoints, trains and accredits examiners who travel around NZ to examine children and adults who have studied our syllabuses in Speech, Drama and Public Speaking. Local Secretaries support the examiners by setting up and administering the examinations.

About the role

The Manager of Speech NZ runs the Wellington National Office with a staff of three. The Manager has responsibility for appointing and managing the National Office staff and the Local Secretaries; preparing annual budgets; financial management; making funding applications; marketing with an emphasis on social media; working with staff to develop and manage examination schedules; administering a biennial Examiners' Accreditation Seminar; organising and taking minutes at Board meetings; and developing and maintaining a network of organisations and individuals who support the aims of Speech NZ.

The office is located in Molesworth Street, close to New World, other shops and restaurants.The organisation has a very flat structure, with everybody in the office helping to meet target dates during busy times of the year. The Manager works closely with the Chair of the Board and other Trustees, all of whom are volunteering professionals, dedicated to the objectives of Speech NZ. There is flexibility of working hours; the Manager attends Board meetings three times per year, over weekends. There are many opportunities to grow the business by marketing the range of syllabuses to a wider audience and in particular to migrants and other adults seeking improved communication skills. The Manager has a car park next to the building except on the few days per year when Wellington examinations are held in the National Office.

  • Empathy with the performing arts sector.
  • Excellent written and spoken English language skills.
  • Strong financial management skills.
  • Experience in making funding applications on behalf of a Charity.
  • Ability to manage a small, flat organisation structure
  • Experience of working with a Board of Trustees.
  • Skills in marketing and social media.
