What does a Support Worker do?

Support and encourage individuals in their daily living situation, whether it is in their own home or their community by:

  • Assisting children, young people and adults to learn skills for daily living
  • Teaching people to grow and increase their independence
  • Assisting people to plan and achieve their goals
  • Helping to make positive choices about their lifestyle
  • Supporting people to access and be involved in their community
  • Supporting leisure activities at home
  • Helping people develop and sustain their interests and relationships

What skills will a Support worker require?

A warm and friendly personality, a reasonable level of physical fitness, and the desire to help others are the main requirements. Along with a level of resilience is required as there will be times when you will need to respond to some challenging behaviours.

  • Experience supporting a person with high and complex needs is preferable but not essential as training is provided
  • You will need a full New Zealand Driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle
  • The ability to work with both manual and computerised record keeping
  • Be able to complete satisfactory police check and be legally entitled to work in New Zealand
