Universal Magazines is looking for a full-time Editorial Production Manager for its busy production department. This role is based at our North Ryde office and will suit a highly organised person who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment. This is a key role in the production department facilitating and coordinating editorial content across a large number of magazines. Previous production experience in a print media environment would be highly regarded.
The role will include:
- Trafficking all editorial content and working closely with freelance sub-editors and proof-readers.
- Facilitating workflow and relationships between editorial, art, print production, and pre-press.
- Communicating closely with both in-house and freelance editors.
- Assisting in ensuring production deadlines are met.
- Preparing an annual budget for editorial production department and supervising how they are spent
- Depending on the candidates strengths and background either an Editing workload or a Subbing & Proofing workload.
Applicants should have a relevant tertiary qualification along with the following skills:
- Brilliant organisation and maturity
- Proven ability to multi-task and work under tight deadlines
- Previous sub-editing experience
- Flawless spelling, punctuation and grammar
- A keen eye for accuracy and consistency
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Office

Job Outline
Each week this role contacts Editors who are submitting work for a magazine edition and ensures that work goes through subbing in to design and production. This role therefore beats the drum that sets the tempo for the rest of the company. The role has its finger on the pulse of what is going on, where, when and what needs to be prioritised in order to make production.
Once this work is done the role performs its own tasks which are either Subbing/Proofing or Editing work (depending on the candidate’s experience).
Editing Work
If editing the publications are:

- Choosing A School NSW & VIC (with admin assistance)
- HIA Top Homes

- Special Projects
These publications interface with the Customer Success team who interface with the customer for advertorial content. The role of the Editor therefore is to plan, write or commission features, source imagery, write or edit customer content, paginate, see each edition through production, attend meetings, and act as figurehead/influencer for the brand.
Subbing/Proofing
If Subbing/Proofing the publications are allocated according to the needs of the production schedule. The role could be working on Road Rider one day and Grand Designs the next.
Training & Context
This role works within the production department attending regular production meetings with the Publisher and Associate Publishers. A principle of the department is that everyone learns everyone else’s roles, so training is provided in basic pre-press, handling printers, scheduling ad production.
