About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

We deliver world class research, innovation and skills for the UK. We combine world-class facilities including the Central Laser Facility, the Hartree Centre, ISIS and RAL Space, with major international collaborations with organisations such as CERN and some of the world’s most talented staff. Our Laboratories at Harwell, Oxfordshire and Daresbury, Cheshire are positioned at the heart of a joint venture initiative to stimulate innovation and growth.

About The Role

Octopus is the UK’s national facility for optical microscopy, part of STFC’s Central Laser Facility. Based in the Research Complex at Harwell, an interdisciplinary centre located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford, Octopus offers a unique portfolio of world-class microscopy techniques for the research community.

We are now increasing access to Octopus for users from industry and we are recruiting an additional link scientist. Link scientists are expected to have significant expertise in one or more of the microscopy techniques and we are seeking someone with experience of Light Sheet Microscopy. You will join the existing team and support users from both industry and academia, focussing on programmes requiring Light Sheet Microscopy. You will also have a role in coordinating industrial access, working closely with a technician who is also being recruited. Link scientists are encouraged to pursue their own areas of research and development, in line with the priorities of the facility.

Tasks for this new position are to:

  • Work with the rest of the Octopus team to advise potential users and provide the technical lead on the appropriate instrumentation and experimental procedures, identifying programmes and communities that would benefit from the use of Light Sheet Microscopy
  • Lead facility development in the area of Light Sheet Microscopy
  • Publicise the facility to industry and to the academic community, through visits to potential users and through presentations at national meetings and international conferences.

Successful applicants will be appointed at either Band D or Band E of STFC’s staffing hierarchy, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.

About You

You will have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline as well as postdoctoral or equivalent Research and Development experience in a relevant post.

It is essential that you have significant experience in light sheet microscopy along with an in depth knowledge of the challenges facPost-doctoral experience using and developing light sheet microscopy methods.

Benefits

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered.
