Detail information about job Protein Scientist – Drug Discovery Programme. Terms and conditions vacancy

Fixed term contract - 3 year post in the first instance

The Drug Discovery Programme at the Beatson Institute in Glasgow, is one of three Cancer Research UK funded Drug Discovery teams across the UK.  These teams aim to work closely with local cancer experts to maximise the opportunity to develop new and innovative therapies that strike at the core of cancer pathology.  Using state of the art screening and structural biology technology, industry standard medicinal chemistry and complex biological modelling systems, the Drug Discovery group at the Beatson is tackling some of the most challenging targets in cancer biology today.  After a number of successful rounds of funding, we are now looking to further expand our operations across Chemistry, Structural Biology and Biology.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Scientist with a passion for laboratory science to join our team.

As a valued member of our Protein Production team, you will work collaboratively with all disciplines (biophysicists, protein scientists, crystallographers, bioscientists and chemists) at the Beatson, supplying recombinant proteins to drive our key discovery processes.  Initially, the role will require you to perform recombinant protein expression, principally in Escherichia coli, towards the purification of high quality recombiant material.  There may also be opportunity for you to work in additional protein production and biophysics areas, subject to operational requirements.  You will demonstrate the ability to plan ahead and solve problems independently.  With a creative approach to problem solving, good interpersonal skills and a strong IT aptitude you will ideally have gained experience in microbiological culture techniques and the isolation/characterisation of recombinant proteins.

Skills & Experience:

  • Minimally a 2:1 BSc in microbiology, biochemistry or a related discipline
  • A passion and enthusiasm for recombinant protein engineering and production.
  • A good understanding and experience of recombinant techniques and protein purification methodology.
  • Ability to manage own workload on a day-to-day basis.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Experience of working in a drug discovery environment would be an advantage.

In return, we offer an inspiring, supportive and multi-disciplinary environment in a state-of-the-art, purpose built laboratory in which to further enhance your skills and knowledge of medicinal chemistry, cancer biology and drug discovery; providing you the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of cancer patients.

Applications must be made via our website at http://www.beatson.gla.ac.uk/careers/drug-discovery/

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be addressed to Dr Chris Gray; [email protected]

Closing date for applications is September 30th 2017.
