Work Hours 35.0 Hours per Week

An exciting new research position is available to conduct morphing aircraft research as part of a €6M, 3.5 year long EU H2020 project on Shape Adaptive Blades for Rotorcraft Efficiency (SABRE), led by the University of Bristol. The SABRE project will bring together six research organisations from across Europe to develop ground-breaking new helicopter blade morphing technologies. Working as part of the University of Bristol SABRE team, you will be a vital player in the success of what this ambitious, multi-faceted project aims to deliver. As part of this, research into a new compliance based morphing aerofoil concept known as the Fish Bone Active Camber (FishBAC) concept will be taking place at Bristol. This work will combine structural and aerodynamic modelling with experimental testing, and will focus on development of this promising concept for use in the challenging rotary wing environment.

You will be responsible for the development of analytical/numerical models of FishBAC structural and aerodynamic performance and for a diverse experimental test program involving material, benchtop, actuation system, wind tunnel, and whirl tower testing. This work will build off existing models and promising initial wind tunnel results (25% reduction in drag compared to traditional flaps) to increase the fidelity of the methods used, the depth of understanding, and the achievable performance of the concept. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Benjamin Woods, project partners, and a team of SABRE researchers at Bristol, and will attend project meetings hosted by the partners (in Italy, Germany, and The Netherlands) and contribute to project deliverables and dissemination activities. There is also the opportunity to provide supervision of summer interns and undergraduate student projects and mentorship of PhD students.

This post is being offered on a full time, open-ended contract with funding for up to two years in the first instance.
