The School of Applied Social Studies comprises senior practitioners and academics who together to produce high quality education, training and research. The recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) identified more than three-quarters of the School’s research in child and family welfare, crime, young people and social exclusion, and law and social policy, as world leading placing us in the top quartile for social work and social policy research. We are an active and growing community of scholars, teachers and researchers who work collaboratively in sustaining the highest standards of pedagogy relevant to applied policy and practice in the human services.

The School includes our HCPC regulated social work provision and a range of courses more broadly related to the applied social sciences. It is a thriving and growing school with around 50 staff and 1200 students. Courses are delivered principally at Luton, but also both directly and with partners at a range of other sites including our new study centres in London.  

To be successful, you will need strong leadership and management skills to enable your team to build on their recent portfolio review, to capitalise upon the recent appointment of additional new staff, to manage the exciting opportunity of our new study centres and to work with the relevant research institute (IASR) on our common commitment to ensuring another very strong submission to the next REF.

You will be a member of the Faculty Executive which works closely to drive forward collective and systematic improvements to the student and staff experience. You will also be part of the Vice-Chancellor’s extended Senior Leadership Team which meets monthly to learn about and contribute to wider developments.
