Job DescriptionWe are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated Bioinformatician to work in the EGA and Archive Infrastructure Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The successful applicant will work with a focused team of developers, bioinformaticians and user support personnel on the Accelerating Medicines Partnership - Type 2 Diabetes project (http://www.type2diabetesgenetics.org/). You will help to build and test federated, multi-platform, cloud-friendly pipelines for genetic association studies, and statistical analysis of variation and its effect in type 2 diabetes and associated phenotypes. You will use large GWAS datasets to verify and benchmark the results from the analysis modules being deployed at the EMBL-EBI node against results from the node at the Broad Institute. You will coordinate the adoption of new types of analysis with our national and international partners and you will be expected to travel for meetings and conferences where required. At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 22 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer.

Qualifications and ExperienceYou should hold a bachelor's or higher degree in computer science, computational biology or bioinformatics.

You will have:

  • Relevant experience and skills in computational biology, bioinformatics, or statistics
  • Expertise in one or more of: Java, R, Python
  • Experience of relational databases
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others

The following would be desirable:

  • Previous experience of GWAS
  • Knowledge of Docker containers, virtual machines and cloud environments
  • Experience of international collaborations, clinical and phenotype ontologies / terminology, and working with controlled-access human data
  • Proficiency in next-generation sequencing data analysis and variant analysis
  • Experience dealing with real-world data problems such as versioning, ensuring reproducibility and traceability

The ability to work within a team and international consortium is critical to this position, and excellent communication skills and an ability to work to tight deadlines are essential. You will be required to communicate technical documents and take part in the daily scrum with software developers, as well as provide user orientated communication with external and internal users of the systems.

BenefitsEMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation.

We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise.

If you’ve ever visited the campus you’ll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Our staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities including a gym, a free shuttle bus, an on-site nursery, cafés and restaurant and a library.
