Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Nurse to help co-ordinate and recruit to clinical volunteer studies in a collaboration with Duke University/US Department of Defence supervised by Dr Christopher Chiu. The study focuses on influenza, one of the most important causes of severe respiratory infection worldwide, and aims to understand why some people become more sick than others.
You will be joining a thriving and dynamic group of enthusiastic and dedicated doctors, research nurses, scientists and students with a shared mission to combat respiratory infections. In addition to training in the clinical skills required, you will have the opportunity to further your knowledge of ethics and project management of clinical trials.
Our work focuses on immunity in the airway and blood following natural or experimental human infection with influenza and RSV. You will work with a clinical research fellow and senior research nurse to manage all clinical aspects of the study. The post involves advertising for and recruiting volunteers; screening and assessment; assisting with clinical study procedures (such as phlebotomy and nasal washes); liaison with volunteers; data input and recording of trial observations; maintenance of health and safety standards; preparing the quarantine facility; assisting with inoculation; reviewing the subjects during quarantine and at follow-up; monitoring the quarantine ward; and administering the safety and ethics of the study.
During the winter influenza season, you may help coordinate and execute the collection of blood, respiratory samples and clinical information from hospitalised patients. The post-holder will have an honorary contract with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
You should be fully qualified in nursing with demonstrable post-registration experience in a relevant area. Experience in respiratory medicine, infection and/or previous research experience is highly advantageous but not essential. You must have excellent organisational and communication skills, be able to work flexibly on your own and as part of the multidisciplinary team, be proactive and wish to develop a career in clinical research.
Please note that as this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check will be required for the successful candidate.
