Detail information about job Postdoctoral Research Assistant. Terms and conditions vacancy

We are looking to recruit a postdoctoral research assistant to investigate the microphysical and microwave scattering properties of ice particles. This is part of a new 3-year NERC-funded project called “PICASSO”, which aims to improve our understanding of ice crystals and snowflakes in clouds using state-of-the art aircraft and remote-sensing measurements.

The field experiment will be based around the Chilbolton Facility for Atmospheric and Radio Research (www.chilbolton.stfc.ac.uk) which has a suite of radars and other remote-sensors which we will use to probe the clouds, in coordination with the FAAM research aircraft (www.faam.ac.uk) which is instrumented with the latest microphysical probes.

You will make a major contribution to the field experiment, and use the resulting data set to make advances in our understanding of ice particles in clouds, how they scatter electromagnetic waves, and the implications for radar and radiometer retrievals of cloud properties.

You will be part of the vibrant, research-intensive Department of Meteorology here at the University of Reading (see http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/about/ for more info).

You will publish your results in peer-reviewed journal articles, and present your work at conferences/meetings, and will work with a team at the University of Manchester, scientists at the Met Office, and other external partners to achieve the project aims and follow through the impact of your results to improvement of remote-sensing algorithms, and numerical weather prediction models.

You will have:

  • A PhD (or expectation that one will soon be awarded) in a physical science
  • Research experience in one of the following:
    • Radar meteorology
    • Cloud microphysics
    • Scattering of electromagnetic waves by particles
  • Programming and data analysis skills

Please see the job description and person specification document for further details. Please apply for the job online. In your application, you should explain how your skills/experience match each of the criteria listed in the person specification.
