£28,936 to £32,548 per annum together with USS pension benefits.

The normal expectation is that the successful applicant will be appointed to the minimum of the scale with annual increments on 1 October each year (subject to completing six months service).

Applicants are invited for the position of Technology Support Officer (TSO) within the College of Engineering, to work at the UK National Steel Innovation Centre (UK-NSIC) hosted by Swansea University in partnership with the businesses of Tata Steel UK and the broader steel supply chains, across the UK.

UK-NSIC is a new shared vision creating an ‘Open Innovation’ centre, led by Swansea University, with Tata Steel UK initially aligned as the core partner. The centre will lead a transformation of the strip steel industry in the UK, which supplies major manufacturing activities including; packaging, construction and automotive. Tata Steel will be transferring its RD&I (Research Development & Innovation) equipment in the UK to Swansea University by Quarter 4 of 2017, to create phase 1 of this new and exciting innovation centre.

The exciting role of Technology Support Officer (TSO) will provide technical and operational based support, initially for the relocation and re-installation of equipment from the Swinden Technology Centre (Tata Steel’s UK R&D Centre) to Swansea University. Following this transition period, the role will involve the continuous operation of the equipment, providing Swansea with research excellence in the fields of Steel manufacturing, primary processing and process & product development. Once located in Swansea, the equipment will form an integral role in providing the UK with the open access Steel Innovation Centre that the UK requires. UK-NSIC will be housed at the former Engineering Building on Swansea University’s Singleton Campus, during phase 1 (2017 – 2019), however, a longer-term project involving the building of a new purpose designed facility (Phase 2), will expand UK-NSIC’s capabilities and partnership potential, creating a network facility, which is expected to be operational towards the end of 2019.

The successful applicants will join a new team of industry focussed academics, researchers, technologists and industrial experts, who collectively, will transform the UK steel industry, into a global leader in low carbon iron and steelmaking, with particular specialisms in; novel materials development, late stage product diversification, value adding coatings technology and novel construction materials, for creating active building facades. The role encompasses knowledge transfer and research activities related to the needs of the UK Steel sector in the field of Fracture & Fatigue and Mechanical Properties of Materials.
