The Faculty of Geosciences and the Environment (FGSE) of the University of Lausanne invites applications for a
Assistant professor (tenure track) at 60-80% in development practice
to be housed in the Institute of Geography and Sustainability(IGD).
We are looking for a researcher in the social sciences with a focus in international development and the environment. In order to complement the IGD’s existing expertise and our needs in terms of teaching, we seek a candidate with a foot in the applied domain, for instance through employment, collaboration or consulting with development agencies. The 20-40% of time left open should permit the candidate to continue or develop his or her extra-university activities in this domain.
InformationAppointment will be at the Assistant Professor level (tenure track), with Associate Professor status achieved within 5-6 years. However, exceptionally, we will consider outstanding candidates for direct appointment to the Associate Professor level, notably if this corresponds with our gender equity objectives. Contract length : 6 years, tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor expected after 5-6 years

Your responsibilitiesThe successful candidate will join the research group “Development, societies, environments” within the IGD. The position requires an interest in teaching as well as the ability to supervise masters and doctoral students. The successful candidate will teach in human geography at the Bachelor level. He or she will contribute to the Masters in Geography, specialisation “Development and environment”, by teaching courses on the conception and evaluation of projects and introduction to international development practice.
Your qualificationsThe successful candidate should have specific expertise in one (or several) of the topical areas covered by the IGD or the other institutes of the FGSE, for instance: disaster risk reduction, urban ecology, agroecology/agroeconomy, water resources management, biodiversity conservation, or heritage protection. The candidates must demonstrate a capacity to undertake quality research, to obtain competitive research funding, and to publish in peer-reviewed international research journals in the field of development.
A good command of both French and English language is preferable. If French is not the native language, teaching ability in French has to be acquired within two years of the appointment. The University provides language courses to aid with this acquisition.
