English Language Centre (ELC)

£39,324 - £49,772 pa

This is an exciting opportunity to join the English Language Centre (ELC) at the University of Liverpool to lead on the development and delivery of programmes to the ever-increasing number of individuals and university groups from around the world who undertake a short period of study with the ELC.

You will be responsible for ‘Activate English’, the ELC’s flexible general English programme, and for ensuring that it operates in the best interests of individual enrolments and incoming groups. Working closely with the Marketing & International Relations Team in the ELC, you will be responsible for the delivery of group contracts, including bespoke elements, and for ensuring high levels of student satisfaction. It is also envisaged that you will lead on the ELC’s tailor-made short course provision, including the growth of ESP and English language teacher training provision, both drawing on the expertise of academic departments and contributing to a Centre of Excellence for Language Teaching & Learning at the University of Liverpool.

The University of Liverpool is a member of the prestigious group of 24 Russell Group Universities and is ranked in the top 1% of higher education institutions worldwide. The English Language Centre (ELC) is part of the Directorate of Student Experience & Enhancement, and has an important role to play in the realisation of the University’s Strategy 2026.

The ELC has over 25 years’ experience delivering high quality language teaching to students from all over the world. The ELC offers a year-long and summer Pre-sessional course, general English and bespoke packages to individuals and groups from around the world, and is responsible for the provision of English language support, much of which is discipline-specific, to international students engaged in study at the University of Liverpool (in Liverpool and at the University of Liverpool in London). The International Summer School also sits within the ELC’s portfolio, ensuring the ELC is fully engaged in activity across the institution.

With the growth of ‘Activate English’ the student demographic within the English Language Centre has become truly international with students representing 40 different countries over the last two years. The ELC comprises a permanent team of more than 20 University Tutors and Coordinators, as well as a dedicated Marketing & International Relations team, Clerical team, Social & Welfare team, and Data & Technical support. In the last 12 months, more than 500 students have passed through ‘Activate’, as well as teacher development groups, the International Summer School and a Pre-sessional cohort of approximately 600. The ELC has recently moved to new premises shared with the Department of Modern Languages & Cultures and cementing the University’s commitment to being a Centre of Excellence for Language Teaching & Learning.

You will be an experienced EFL practitioner with a strong academic background and a proven track record of course management and team coordination. You will be familiar with the challenges of commercial English language provision and be able to suggest innovative solutions to issues of rolling enrolment, syllabus design and student progression. You will be stimulated by the need to balance competing priorities of various student groups and short courses, and be excited by the possibilities the University environment affords for course innovation. Ideally you will have experience of working within a University setting and of liaising with academic and professional services colleagues to deliver an exceptional student experience.

Reporting to the ELC Director, you will:

  • Take overall responsibility for the development and delivery of the English Language Centre’s ‘Activate English’ and short course (incl. tailor-made provision) across the EFL/ESP/TEFL portfolio, accommodating both groups and individuals.
  • Take responsibility for English language modules offered by the ELC on the University of Liverpool International Summer School (ISS).
  • Be a member of the ELC Management Team, contributing to the leadership of the ELC, and deputise (in conjunction with others) for the ELC Director when required.
