Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate in the Department of Psychology, to work with Dr. Ryan McKay, Mr. Ben Tappin and Dr. Charles Efferson on a project entitled “Public Understanding of Science in a Post-Truth World”.

The project consists of two broad studies employing theory and methods from cognitive neuropsychiatry, social and evolutionary psychology, cultural evolution and experimental economics. The overarching aim is to illuminate how destructive “misbeliefs” about empirical reality persist and proliferate in the face of contrary scientific evidence. These studies have been designed in general terms. The role of the Research Associate is to finalise the protocol with the Co-PIs (above) and to assist with implementing the studies approved in the grant application. This will entail preparing materials, programming experimental treatments, and recruiting and testing participants. The Research Associate may also contribute to data analysis, write-up, and further research design. There may be publication opportunities as part of this project for the Research Associate.

It is essential that: candidates have postgraduate training in a relevant field (e.g., MSc or PhD in economics or psychology), with a focus on belief formation or a related field; sophisticated statistical skills; and experience of running human subjects in psychology studies.

It is preferred that: candidates have experience with programming and running experimental economics studies, as well as online studies using Qualtrics software.

This is a full-time, fixed-term post, available from October 1st 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter, for a period of 18 months. This post is based in Egham, Surrey, within commuting distance from London and Oxford.
