About the opportunityThe School of Life and Environmental Sciences is a world leader in the life, earth and environmental sciences and education. We achieve this through encouraging international collaboration across all our research endeavours, and through strategic partnerships that are global in their reach.

The Sydney Institute of Agriculture was established to bring together agricultural research from across the University of Sydney and contribute valuable knowledge to the agriculture and food sector.

The position will work with a team led by Associate Professor Luciano Gonzalez in Livestock in Future Landscapes. The goal of this group is to identify livestock systems that optimize welfare, production, economic and environmental outcomes. The position requires a strong background in one or more of livestock biology, livestock systems modelling, and remote monitoring and sensing technology applied to animals and the environment.

The position will interact with other University of Sydney researchers, outside organizations, and the livestock industries. The successful candidate will be expected to do extensive traveling to research properties across Australia as required. S/he will be expected to contribute to the teaching program of the research group, with demonstrated capability in the presentation of relevant lectures, workshops, or practical teaching activities an advantage.

About youThis position is to work in a research project on livestock welfare and production, including beef and sheep across Australia. A focus of the project is on reducing mortality in sheep and cattle through the use of sensor technologies for near real-time monitoring and prediction models. This will require a holistic approach to livestock production systems including the animals, environment, economics and management.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Livestock Production who possesses:

  • PhD degree or equivalent in a relevant field;
  • Demonstrated research capacity in livestock biology and production, and livestock systems modelling (including animal nutrition, growth, reproduction, ecology, pasture growth and economics)
  • Demonstrated capacity using programing and statistical software such as R, SAS, and/or Matlab.
