Cranfield University is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management. This position is one of four new posts at Cranfield related to the EPSRC’s Global Challenges Research Fund programme of research, centred around engineering and digital technologies, to tackle the challenges faced by the developing world.

The project focuses on using unmanned aerial systems UASs to collect, interpret, and disseminate information about flooding as the events are occurring. The project will develop and demonstrate an effective emergency flood management approach based on the real time collection of data by Unmanned Aerial Systems UAS with fast processing mathematical models for flooding, evacuation route planning and adaptive emergency response resource allocation.

You will contribute to the successful delivery of the project. In particular, you will contribute to flood mapping, data assimilation and evacuation route modelling as well as capacity building and user engagement. Your contribution will also be expected as and when required related to UAS guidance, navigation and control GNC ; Adaptive and optimal resources planning; Experiments and Prototype decision support system.

You must have a PhD obtained or near completion in a topic relevant to Image analysis and/or computing, flood modelling or environmental science, alongside experience of developing and using quantitative computer models pertinent to flood modelling and high quality experience of remote sensing techniques and UAS image collection and processing.

You should have a real interest in understanding how emergency response and governance arrangements work in practice and in translating their work into practical tools and techniques for us in practice by emergency responders.  You should have sound knowledge of remote sensing and statistical software e.g. modelling, together with the ability of dealing with large data sets.

If you are flexible and dynamic, have very good communications skills, are well-organised and have the ambition to build your own reputation through research, then we would like to hear from you.
