  • Join a supportive and friendly, organisation with a passion for education.
  • Are you an excellent communicator who works well under pressure?
  • Are you a quick learner, able to multiple task and exercise good judgement?

The Education Council is a professional body representing teachers from early childhood education through primary and secondary schooling in English and Māori medium schools.  We provide leadership and help to strengthen the regulatory framework and disciplinary regime for teaching. We aim to boost the status of teaching, strengthening accountability and bringing consistently high standards of teaching across the profession.

The Role:

This position is central to the functioning of the Competence area, supporting the work of a team of evaluators, supporting the functions of the Competence Authority and liaising with a wide range of external stakeholders. This is a great opportunity for a recent law graduate to develop skills within the regulatory framework for teaching.

The role involves receiving and collating information from teachers and employers, some initial assessment of that information, managing files and databases, handling multiple communications and the distribution of agendas and minutes for the Competence Authority. You will be responsible for contacting teachers, employers and complainants about the competence process, drafting decisions and advising all parties of the Authority’s decision.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must.  You will often be the voice and face of the Council in circumstances that can be stressful for the people involved, so a high level of emotional intelligence is required.

You’ll thrive working at pace and accurately to tight deadlines and will be able to work effectively with a wide range of people, ensuring a high level of discretion.  You’ll have the capacity to learn fast and work well in a team. If you have te reo Māori and/ or a Pasifika language ability or a willingness to learn, this will be considered favourably as these skills are highly valued at the Council.

We offer plenty of variety throughout a busy day and opportunity to use your initiative. If you pride yourself in producing high quality work all the time and are keen to demonstrate commitment to the education sector, then please apply!

To be successful in this role you’ll need to demonstrate:

  • Energy and resilience with the ability to demonstrate good judgement.
  • Computer literacy, including MS Word, Outlook, Excel. At ease in an online working environment.
  • Strong time management and organisational skills.
  • Great communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively in a diverse workplace with strong commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Knowledge and experience of Government and/or public sector.
  • A passion for the Education Sector is desirable.
