About Us

The Blues Train is Australia’s longest running Blues music venue and one of the Geelong region’s premier tourist attractions. It combines live music performances with a meal, on board a heritage train – it’s a mini music festival in a night.

Established in 1994, The Blues Train operates 40+ shows per annum with over 9,000 people experiencing the event on an annual basis.

Its parent company Bay City Events also provides Event Management, Artistic Programming and Safety Consultancy services to event organisers, councils, community groups and private enterprise.

We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic individual who is passionate about venue and event management to join our already awesome team!

 

The Role

This role is comprised of a Saturday afternoon/night shift working at the event, and two other days between Tuesday and Friday (your choice) working in the office on pre- and post-event activities. There is a view to increasing the role to full time, contingent on the successful candidate’s preferences and performance in the role.

The Venue/Event Manager position is responsible for coordinating all activities in preparation for the Blues Train events and managing on-site, on event days. This involves staff rostering, opening and closing procedures, managing a bar service team of six (6), musician and contractor communication and liaison, customer service and safe and responsible service of alcohol, risk identification and mitigation, post event review and actions, liaison with the operating body of the train infrastructure including adherence to scheduled timetabling, emergency management and problem solving, reporting, and service standards.

 

Key Selection Criteria

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Diploma level qualification in Hospitality and/or equivalent experience in Licensed Venue/Event Management 
  • Current Responsible Service of Alcohol
  • Licensees' First Step desired, but not essential

  • Current Driver’s License
  • Working with Children Check (Employee type not Volunteer), or willingness to obtain upon successful appointment to the role
  • A current First Aid qualification (minimum Provide First Aid), or willingness to obtain upon successful appointment to the role
  • Police check upon successful appointment to the role

 

Experience:

  • Proven experience working as a venue manager or duty manager in hospitality and/or gaming; managing bands, crowd control and staffing for busy event nights such as 21st birthday parties and members nights
  • Demonstrated experience in leading a team and showing initiative
  • Proven experience in related administrative duties

 

Competencies (knowledge, skills and behaviours):

  • Knowledge of Victorian Liquor Regulations
  • Cash management/cash drawer balancing
  • Stock control
  • Outgoing, enthusiastic, flexible and motivated
  • Highly organized, ability to multi-task and a strong work ethic
  • Have a high attention to detail
  • Proven ability to adhere to systems and procedures
  • A natural problem solver and lateral thinker
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate requests and instructions to individuals and groups
  • Commitment to, and enthusiasm for, client service and delivery
  • Possess flexibility and adaptability to manage changing work requirements and varying volumes of work
  • Possess a personal presentation that reflects a professional image
  • Experience in OHS, Risk Management or Emergency Management desirable but not required

 

The job will be based in Queenscliff on Saturday evenings, and Geelong the other two days.
