The role

A rare part-time opportunity has become available for a Senior Librarian – Local History to join our friendly and dedicated Library team. The role is offered on a 30 hour per week basis, Monday to Thursday.    Reporting directly to the Manager Community Partnerships, the position is primarily responsible for developing and maintaining Vincent’s comprehensive local history collection. This position is largely autonomous and will offer the successful candidate scope to grow and improve the existing collection with the support of the Librarian – Local History and a team of volunteers.

Additionally this role will be responsible for:

  • Liaising with local community groups and individuals in order to locate and acquire collection material
  • Work with the Librarian - Local History to initiate oral history projects;
  • Liaising with public libraries, community groups, schools, historical organisations and individuals to promote awareness of the Local History Collection;
  • Develop and present public events and generate displays that reinforce the value of the collection to the community;
  • Produce publications including a quarterly newsletter and work with Marketing to enhance the local history web page;
  • Assist customers in finding material and where necessary direct enquiries to the appropriate source
  • Train and supervise volunteers in customer service, handling historical items and providing assistance with research projects and;
  • Supervise and guide the Librarian, Local History and volunteers

The candidate

We are seeking applications from candidates who have a degree in Librarianship. Qualifications or progress towards a qualification in local history, cultural heritage studies and/or oral history or museum studies will also be highly regarded.

To be successful in this role you will also have:

  • Considerable public library experience, including local history
  • Experience in coordinating events and promotion of library collections
  • Knowledge of state and federal information legislation including FOI, copyright and privacy
  • Experience in using automated library systems i.e. Sirsidynix and strong knowledge of cataloguing and classification systems
  • Sound awareness of conservation and preservation practices including legal requirements
  • Highly developed research skills including strong written and communication skills
  • Well-developed leadership skills and experience supervising staff and volunteers
