  • Permanent full-time position
  • $63,019 - $69,332 per annum

The QRIC provides an intelligence, investigation, educative, scientific and technical investigations and regulatory compliance framework aimed at ensuring the integrity of all persons involved with the Queensland racing industry; safeguarding the welfare of all animals involved in racing; and maintaining public confidence in the racing of animals in Queensland. Its purpose extends to assessing and issuing of licences related to animals and participants that are suitable to be licensed for a code of racing.

Role Responsibility and Accountabilities

The GAP Coordinator (Townsville) reports to the GAP Operations Manager.

The Program Coordinator will assess the behaviour of GAP greyhounds that have retired from racing for their suitability as pets and match these greyhounds to adopting families. This position manages the behavioural assessment and subsequent adoption of greyhounds from the program in North Queensland.

The Program Coordinator will utilise their knowledge and experience of canine behaviour together to apply the GAP National Temperament Test (GAPNTT) and to assess each greyhound for its suitability for adoption. The Program Coordinator will also be required to conduct pre-assessments of greyhounds before they enter the program, and these assessments will be conducted in a number of localities within south east Queensland.

The Program Coordinator will identify GAP greyhounds requiring behavioural modification plans (BMPs), and supervise and carry out the training and activities associated with the plans.

The Program Coordinator will maintain all greyhounds’ files and update all information gathered about each greyhound in a timely manner.

This position is the first point of contact for greyhound racing industry members wishing to enter their dogs into the program, and for members of the public seeking to have their non-GAP greyhound green collar assessed.

This position also liaises with the public regarding adoptions and provides ongoing support to adoption families who may have concerns or questions regarding behavioural issues.

The Program Coordinator will work collaboratively with all GAP and QRIC employees, industry, volunteers and key stakeholders to enhance GAP’s functionality as an animal welfare entity in North Queensland and raise its visibility in the community.  As the kennels operate on a shift system, shift work will be necessary.

The position is responsible for assisting with the promotion of the GAP Program for the QRIC to members of the public.  This position encourages, educates and supports racing industry participants, foster carers, adoption applicants and new owners, as well as members of the community.

The Program Coordinator will;

  • Perform and administer behavioural pre-assessments of greyhounds to determine their suitability for entry into the program.
  • Monitor and manage the keeping, health and welfare of all greyhounds held by GAP in North Queensland.
