As a Senior Lawyer, staff operate under limited direction (usually that of a Principal Lawyer) and are required to exercise a considerable degree of independence in their work.
Roles at this level are likely to include supervision responsibilities for more junior lawyers. A Senior Lawyer is expected to have a minimum of four to five years of relevant experience.
Key Responsibilities
The Department of Health is recruiting to fill a number of current and anticipated vacancies across the two legal branches but also wants to establish a merit list of suitable candidates to fill future vacancies within the Legal and Assurance Division over the next 12 months.
Applications are sought from talented lawyers with experience in one or more areas of law relevant to the Department including:
- administrative law.
- litigation and dispute resolution.
- regulatory compliance.
- statutory interpretation.
- commercial law.
- employment law; and
- information access law.
Key Capabilities
Candidates should possess the following qualities and capabilities:
- Demonstrated ability to provide high quality legal services across the range of legal issues relevant to the portfolio.
- Demonstrated ability providing supervision in day-to-day activities including developing, coaching and mentoring staff and building commitment to shared goals within the team.
- Demonstrated legal research, analytical and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated high standard of oral and written communication and client liaison skills.
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, work effectively under pressure and work effectively in a team environment.
- Knowledge and demonstrated application of the principles and practices of workplace diversity, workplace participation and a safe working environment.
Mandatory Qualifications
- Bachelor of law degree or equivalent, admission as a legal practitioner in an Australian Court and eligibility to hold a restricted Government practising certificate.
