Community Laws Officer is needed for one of our Local Government Council located in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. This role is to start ASAP until end August.

 

You will be responsible for the following below:-

  • Investigate all customer requests/reports in a timely manner, relating to relevant legislation. Investigations include those relating to local laws, animal management, or any other issues within the remit of the investigations team. 
  • Collect evidence, obtain statements, conduct interviews and prepare informative and thorough court briefs relating to investigations to achieve successful prosecutions at magistrate’s court. 
  • Compose letters, draft notices and issue infringements showing close attention to detail.
  • Carry out inspections in relation to Local Law matters, the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and other applicable legislation, ensuring that all relevant information is gathered and recorded. 
  • Be pro-active and deal with self-identified problems within the municipality that may not have been instigated by a customer complaint. 
  • Display a high standard of Customer Service.
  • Ensure all complaints and requests for service are properly recorded in relevant databases, that current procedures and statutory requirements are followed and appropriate actions are initiated in a timely manner.
  • Provide reports and recommendations for changes and improvements to existing policies, local laws and activities.
  • Provide advice, guidance and assistance so as to educate and foster a greater understanding in the community of the need to prevent, control and monitor issues associated with Community Laws.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant legislation.
  • Regular attendance at school crossings.
  • Require to wear equipment vest approx. 2kg and body camera (supplied by the council).

 

You will need to have:-

  • Demonstrate experience in an investigative role, specifically including the collection of evidence, taking statements, conducting interviews, and preparing briefs of evidence for presentation in the Magistrate’s Court.
  • Minimum secondary Year 12 education.
  • Experience in Animal Management
  • Cert IV in Animal Control & Regulation or Investigations is preferred.
  • Understand and communicate technical and legal advice relating to Community Laws issues.
  • General knowledge of the goals and objectives of the Community Plan as they relate to the Community Laws Unit.
  • Confident in dealing with animals, in particular cats and dogs and shows awareness to personal safety and animal welfare.  
  • Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution and dealing with the public in complex situations.
  • Strong customer service skills.   
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and oral, including the ability to relate to personnel both within the organisation and outside of Council.
  • Computer literacy and ability to learn new programs quickly.
