World-class engineering for the city of Auckland

Introduction

Watercare Services Limited seeks a Construction Manager to join our highly expert Central Interceptor project team.

As part of the ongoing, multi-billion dollar upgrade and expansion of Auckland's wastewater system, we are building a $1.2bn, 4.5m diameter, 13km wastewater tunnel - the Central Interceptor.

With 10 years' of planning and preparation now behind us, construction contracts will soon be let for this ambitious project.

Originating in Western Springs, the Central Interceptor will wind its way beneath residential and industrial suburbs, and then the Manukau Harbour, before terminating at the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant.

As a long-term fix for recurring wastewater overflows into the Waitemata and Manukau harbours, the Central Interceptor will reduce overflow volumes by up to 80 per cent. At the same time, the tunnel will provide storage and transmission capacity to accommodate the city's fast-growing population.

The project

Watercare - New Zealand's largest water and wastewater utility - services 1.4million Aucklanders. The Central Interceptor is a critical, legacy project that will deliver far-reaching benefits for the people of Auckland.

Lying at depths of between 22 and 110 metres below the surface, the tunnel and link sewers will be supported by 17 shafts at 16 locations along the route. The shafts collect and transfer wastewater into the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, a major pump station will direct all flows into the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Construction will get underway in 2019, and project completion is scheduled for 2025.

The role

Reporting to the Executive Programme Director, the Construction Manager is responsible for providing construction management during the delivery of works to the Central Interceptor programme. Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering construction activity and applying knowledge and experience to the programme, including the management of cost, quality and risk
  • Providing sound advice, support and review for planning investigations, engineering design, quality assurance, contract submissions, payment claims and variations
  • Assisting with identifying interfaces and coordinating with other projects
  • Project administration functions
  • Management of staff, including the attraction, development and retention of a talented team
  • Ensuring a healthy and safe work environment and work practices
  • Delivering environmental and sustainability outcomes, including monitoring resource consent compliance and implementation, compliance with relevant environmental standards and assisting with consent applications where specialist construction management knowledge or planning is required.

The successful candidate

  • A tertiary level professional qualification in civil engineering, preferably with chartered engineer status
  • 10+ years' project management experience in major civil infrastructure projects
  • Tunneling experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with the delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure projects and/or managing corporate, financial, procurement and reporting requirements are an advantage.
