The Project

This civil project is the Devils Pulpit to Richmond River section of the Woolgoolga and Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade in northern New South Wales. The project will deliver a 34km Pacific Highway upgrade linking the Maclean to Devils Pulpit section to the south and the Richmond River to Ballina Bypass section in the north and forms part of the $4.36 billion Woolgoolga to Ballina upgrade – Australia’s largest regional infrastructure project.

Work includes upgrading the Pacific Highway to two lanes in each direction, building seven new bridges, and associated road works consisting of ground treatments, earthworks and road surfacing. The Woolgoolga to Ballina project will duplicate 155km of the Pacific Highway to a four-lane divided road. The project starts about 6km north of Woolgoolga (north of Coffs Harbour) and ends about 6km south of Ballina.

Your opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a highly experienced Safety Advisor. Reporting to the Safety Manager, your responsibilities in the role will include:

  • Preparing Project Risk Register, Project Safety management plan and systems.
  • Liaising with Client for start-up Workshops
  • Support the project to meet the minimum requirements for risk management and prepare risk assessments and emergency plans
  • Assist with pre-selection and on-boarding of sub-contractors
  • Setting up Project corporate reporting systems
  • Driving SHE culture across site teams
  • Assist with ensuring systems and controls required by the essentials are implemented on site
  • Assist with SH&E content of project induction and on-boarding new starters
  • Provide advice/ guidance/deliver in-house training e.g. toolbox, induction, visitor induction
  • Track and report compliance with conditions of approval, regulations and legislation
  • Coach and mentor line management in conducting task observations and other monitoring type observations
  • Provide advice and support on licensing approvals and conditions
  • Assist with return to work arrangements/activities for injured workers
  • Interface with regulatory and accreditation bodies
  • Facilitate project risk workshops
  • Assist with ensuring systems and controls required by the essentials are implemented on site

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Tertiary qualification in Health and Safety or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years relevant experience in construction
  • Experience working with RMS high regarded
  • A strong client focus and excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to negotiate and influence
  • Strong planning & organising ability and a penchant for problem solving
  • Analytical and strategic thinking with demonstrated commercial focus and business acumen
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience on RMS projects will be highly regarded
