The City of Port Phillip is conducting an extensive search for an outstanding candidate for the position of General Manager, Place Strategy and Development, reporting to the CEO. The purpose of this position is to play a critical role in organisational leadership as a member of the executive leadership team and in a functional leadership role to achieve excellence for the Place Strategy and Development portfolio.

The City of Port Phillip, formed in 1994, is an amalgamation of the former cities of Port Melbourne, South Melbourne and St Kilda.  Nine councillors represent three wards across the City to make up the Port Phillip Council.  Council delivers a broad range of services.  To strengthen the delivery of the Council Plan and its key strategic priorities, Council has developed an organisational strategy called ‘Community First’.  Community First is a mindset whereby all Council actions are viewed through the community’s eyes, ensuring delivery of the best possible services, projects and outcomes for the community Council serves. 

The General Manager, Place Strategy and Development will lead a team of 110 full time employees and will be accountable for the delivery of key strategies included in the Council Plan in the areas of Water and Waste Management, Sustainability and Transport Transformations. The division will also play a key role in planning for Fisherman’s Bend which will be Australia’s largest urban renewal project and other strategic initiatives including Our Backyard Housing Strategy and the development of a new Public Spaces strategy.

As the General Manager Place Strategy and Development, you will lead the implementation of major council strategies, and the transformation program in conjunction with the CEO and the Executive team. In leading the Places Strategy & Development Division you will provide leadership on complex change issues within the community, building capability and coaching of your team, overseeing multiple projects and leading a cultural change program.

As the General Manager Place Strategy and Development, you will possess executive level leadership skills, exceptional vision, strategic planning and project management skills.  You will also have a high degree of business acumen, strong financial skills and demonstrated experience in leading and influencing organisational change.  You will be tertiary qualified, strategic, articulate and collaborative and will have a deep understanding of working within public service organisations. Your career will highlight your exceptional leadership and management skills, a capacity for system wide thinking and creative problem solving.
