The Uniting Church of Australia is the third largest Christian denomination in Australia with a geographical spread from the largest cities to the remotest towns, and is one of the countries largest faith-based, not for profit organisations. It is also the largest non-government provider of community services in Australia through our community services arm, Uniting.

Uniting Resources (UR), with God’s help and a servant heart, strives to provide innovative leadership and professional services in the effective management and creative use of the church’s resources to achieve God’s mission.

Uniting Resources provides significant centralised finance, IT, HR, payroll, property, insurance, risk, communications and other support resources to the employees, Ministers and representatives of UCA entities in NSW and the ACT, as well as the UCA National Assembly.

Reporting to the General Secretary (CEO equivalent), and to the Chair of the UR Board, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) is an interim role with the Synod of NSW and the ACT, intended as a temporary executive position until ‘Synod 2019’ (July 2019), but with the possibility to extend.

The key purpose of the role is to support the General Secretary through a time of significant transition and change. In particular, you will be required to:

  • Work with the General Secretary to execute several major transformational initiatives, including driving a major governance and policy review program.
  • Collaborate with the General Secretary and Synod Leadership Team in the redesign of Synod operations (chiefly UME & UR) to best meet future purpose, and drawing upon the results of the reviews currently in progress.
  • Provide overall management of the Uniting Resources shared services group and its effective interaction with other relevant Synod entities.
  • Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as they emerge over the duration of the contract in reflection of the rapidly changing societal context of the Church and developments within and beyond the Synod. The successful candidate will have significant experience in leadership within a complex and multifaceted organisation. Tertiary qualifications in business or a related discipline are essential, as is previous experience in delivering strategic material to boards. A sound understanding of, or experience working within the not-for-profit or religious institution sector will be advantageous. Knowledge of and the ability to interpret the Constitution and Regulations of the Uniting Church in Australia and the By-Laws of the NSW and ACT Synod is highly desirable, as is exposure to property or asset management.
