About The Organisation

The Office of Planning Services plays an important role in supporting the University’s strategic and operational planning work. The Office has a particular focus on providing the University Executive and academic managers in the Groups and Schools with relevant, timely and accurate information and analysis in order to assist their decision making.

The Role

This position will be responsible for partnering with business areas to prepare proposals and requirements; design, develop, test and implement new BI analysis and reporting. This includes changes and enhancements to BI solutions. The role will also be expected to provide advice, information and training to clients in use of the BI tools, and understanding and interpretation of the data available. The successful individual will be a results driven team member, with a positive attitude and a demonstrated ability to build strong relationships across various stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Gather, analyse and document business requirements, identify appropriate data sources, and define business and transformation rules. This includes conducting workshops with a variety of business stakeholders, including executive sponsors, end-users and technical developers, to discuss, determine and present business requirements, prototypes and strategies.
  • Recommend and implement technically sound, visually meaningful analysis and reporting to ensure data is prepared clearly and intuitively.
  • Provide advice, training and assistance to a wide variety of university staff on how Business Intelligence tools and solutions may meet their current and emerging needs and interpretation of the information provided.
  • Respond appropriately and in a timely manner to complex requests for business information.
  • Collaborate with technical developers to translate business reporting requirements into detailed solution design documents.
  • Liaise with technical staff to facilitate the provision and interpretation of information appropriate for corporate use, including coordinating data management tasks to ensure the integrity and semantic consistency of Business Intelligence solutions.
  • Take the lead for the resolution of functional and business-related issues, including verification of test cases and test results to ensure business requirements are met.
  • Communicate with business stakeholders to respond to business questions, provide project updates, data and report validations and document sign-offs.
  • Participate in the development of appropriate policies and procedures, and develop and maintain document templates.

About You

  • High level analytical skills demonstrated by the ability to research and to apply problem-solving skills to complex problems.
  • Experience with IBM Cognos, Tableau and some experience or training in SQL
  • Extensive demonstrated use of modern BI tools in the collection, validation, analysis, interpretation and visualisation of complex data. Considerable knowledge of reporting, cube building and presentation tools, BI practices and concepts, data analysis, data quality practices, and dimensional modelling.
  • Excellent client relations and communication skills with experience in negotiating and problem-solving with clients.
  • Demonstrated facilitation and presentation skills in groups at all levels of the University.
  • Proven personal characteristics including flexibility, initiative/motivation, and strong team and interpersonal skills.
  • Postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and / or extensive relevant experience.
