Women's Legal Service provides high quality legal services to women, specialising in the areas of family law, domestic violence, child protection and some sexual violence matters through our Counselling Notes Protect service.  More broadly, WLS is passionate about empowering First Nation’s women to obtain the legal support they need to maximise their legal outcomes.

The First Nation’s Support and Cultural Liaison Worker will be responsible for engaging, consulting and collaborating with communities to increase awareness, engagement, access and utilisation of WLS services. This role will also work with WLS Management, Solicitors, Social Workers and other key stakeholders to increase awareness of issues in communities and to enable WLS to implement and deliver relevant and focused services. 

The Opportunity

We are seeking a First Nation’s Support and Cultural Liaison Worker to join our new Domestic Violence Unit at Caboolture.

This role is being offered as a part time, 12 month contract (22.5 hours a week). 

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Identifying, engaging, consulting and collaborating with key community networks in the Caboolture and surrounding region.  Building relationships with Elders within the community to educate and help raise the awareness about services WLS provide.
  • Applying a broad range of community development and engagement processes and practices to assist WLS to identify issues affecting First Nation’s women and their communities to enable WLS to provide focused and relevant services and to advocate for women in First Nation’s communities more effectively.
  • Providing emotional, social and gender specific cultural liaison support to First Nation’s women.  This includes assisting women to get to and from the service and being a support person for them throughout their legal matter.
  • Participating in the WLS community education program.
  • Participating in internal education with staff so WLS is aware of issues impacting communities and how we can adapt our service to maximise legal outcomes.
  • Working with WLS staff to ensure that WLS information / materials / brochures are presented in a culturally informed way.
  • Contributing to the WLS Strategy to ensure that WLS provides relevant and focused services and resources.
  • Representing WLS at community, interagency and other relevant stakeholder meetings and community events to promote our services.
  • Contributing to a collaborative team culture for staff and volunteers which is professional, productive, supportive and consistent with the WLS values and feminist principles.

Mandatory Requirements

It is a genuine occupational requirement that this role is filled by a First Nation’s woman as permitted under s 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld).

The successful applicant will be required to nominate, as a referee, a First Nation’s woman / Elder who is recognised within a First Nation’s community to attest to their ability to meet the key responsibilities of this position.

WLSQ has an exemption under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that allows for the employment of women only within the organisation. 

Skills and Capabilities

  1. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the First Nation’s communities, needs and relationships having worked in a similar capacity previously.
  2. Demonstrated experience planning, delivering and participating in education and information sessions and producing culturally appropriate resources.
  3. Well developed and effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to make appropriate client referrals, and communicate sensitively and appropriately with vulnerable and disadvantaged clients. 
  4. High level of organisational and time management skills including the ability to work positively both independently and as a member of a team.
  5. Sound knowledge and understanding of legal and social issues affecting First Nation’s women and women from a range of different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and a commitment to working for a community organisation within a feminist framework in a manner consistent with the mission, purpose and values of WLS.
  6. Qualifications in Law, Justice, Human Services, Social Sciences, Communications or similar discipline would be highly regarded.
  7. Open Queensland Driver’s License.

  • An attractive remuneration package (circa pro rata $69,495 to $79,514 p.a. + 9.5% superannuation, depending on your level of experience).
