Classroom Teacher

Glenroy Special School provides a stimulating, caring and safe learning environment for students with physical disabilities/health impairments. We provide for students who are aged from 5 to 18 years and currently have an enrolment of 143. The school environment is designed with an extensive hoist system, internal & external play areas, hydrotherapy & nursing facilities and a transport hub for the fleet of buses that transport the students to and from school.

Many students have multiple disabilities with visual impairment, hearing impairment and epilepsy in addition to their physical disability. We also have students with high-support health care needs.  Three nurses manage the general wellbeing and health support. Glenroy Special School staff and the Yooralla staff work together to provide students with a comprehensive program within an integrated curriculum. Therapy is conducted within the classroom by the whole team.The school is divided into three sub-schools each with a sub-school leader. Sub-schools are age based with individual classes formed to cater for student academic and social abilities. Our senior school offers Transition and VCAL programs. School specialist teaching rooms include art, library, music/music therapy, physiotherapy and OT spaces, sensory rooms and a hydrotherapy pool. All staff support students in education, therapy & recreation programs.  All staff participate in personal  care programs and are involved in manual handling.

SC1         Demonstrated ability to plan, deliver and assess and report on engaging and challenging individual educational programs within the context of classroom and specialist programs for students who have profound and multiple learning difficulties.

SC2         Demonstrated high level classroom teaching skills and the capacity to work with colleagues to continually improve teaching and learning.

SC3         Demonstrated ability to monitor and assess student learning data and to use this data to inform teaching for improved student learning.

SC4         Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and high level interpersonal skills including the capacity to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with parents, other employees and the broader school community to focus on student learning, wellbeing and engagement.

SC5         Demonstrated ability to be physically involved in programs across the school including hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, mobility training, manual handling and student personal care.

SC6         Three referees to support the applicant including name, contact numbers and email address.

A TEACHER AT GLENROY SPECIALIST SCHOOL WILL:- Actively promote and support the school values- Be an active member of the school community, a subschool team and a Professional Learning Teams- Coordinate the classroom transdisciplinary team- Plan, implement and evaluate appropriate programs that cater for the individual needs of students in the context of the school curriculum- Keep a record of programs, a weekly work program, and an assessment of students ongoing progress.- Prepare Individual Education Plans and report on student progress- Actively participate in a range of physical programs that include lifting, transferring, meal assisting and toileting students.- Coordinate aquatics programs as a regular part of the education program.- Demonstrate a co-operative, communicative and supportive approach to colleagues, parents and students.- Attend scheduled meetings- Carry out duties such as Yard duty, Bus duty- Be responsible for the implementation of school policies and programs.- Actively participate in targeted professional development and demonstrate new learnings in classroom practice and to colleagues- Undertake other duties as required by the Principal

The role of classroom teacher may include but is not limited to:

- Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students;

- Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of a curriculum area or other curriculum program within the school;

- Undertaking other classroom teaching related and organisational duties as determined by the School Principal;

- Participating in activities such as parent/teacher meetings; staff meetings; camps and excursions;

- Undertaking other non-teaching supervisory duties.

Teachers who do not have an approved special education qualification but do have current provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching may apply.  Preference will be given to applicants who have an approved special education qualification or who have significant experience in a Specialist School.
