Mitchell Geocon Geotechnical, Hamilton-based Consulting Geotechnical Engineers are seeking a Senior  Geotechnical Engineer with the potential to take company into the next decade.  Our clients are many and varied, as are our projects and our company is well-established in the local market place and beyond.  For this position, you do not need to have all the answers right now - just a willingness to learn and to continue serving our many and varied clients with Geotechnical  and Environmental Engineering advice of the highest caliber. Mentoring will continue for several years ahead if required as you learn new skills as they become required.

If you are looking for a position that will provide you with a wide range of  experience in all aspects of geotechnical engineering then this is the position for you.  Our principal requirement is experience in technical writing, focused on the requirements of the client and providing expertise advice at all times, taking into consideration the requirements of the project.  A sound academic background is required, with a willingness to learn new skills in all aspects of Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology and Construction. 

A CPEng qualification is required, along with several years experience in working with New Zealand Consultants and Contractors.

The Position

The Geotechnical Engineer who we are seeking will possess skills in carrying out and managing geotechnical investigations and associated reporting, together with knowledge of of stormwater and wastewater disposal and with some structural design experience.  The position will initially provide an opportunity to work alongside our Principal Engineer in developing geotechnical design and documentation for a wide variation of projects.  Following which you will be expected to take on a greater management role, working alongside, and in partnership with, our experienced Project Manager.

Include geotechnical aspects of commercial and residential developments, quarry & mining projects, temporary works and construction design within and beyond the Waikato Region.

With our geotechnical engineering practice having been operating for in excess of 30 years and geotechnical job numbers in excess of 15,000, all of which are well documented and readily available on our computer network.  The depth of experience which we are able to offer to the Building Industry and to Land Developers is well recognized both locally and beyond.  Our past and present projects extend around all parts of the country and thus it is a requirement for the successful candidate to be familiar with the characteristics of all New Zealand geology and geotechnical engineering requirements.

Required Skills and Experience

Essential requirements of this position include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in geotechnical engineering or equivalent expereince
  • A minimum of 4 years relevant geotechnical experience, with a sound knowledge of New Zealand geology
  • An understanding of NZ construction and design requirements
  • Competency in report writing and design documentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and project deadlines
  • Possess NZ Residency

The Company

Mitchell Geocon Geotechnical is a highly respected geotechnical & geological consultancy firm and comprises an enthusiastic team of engineering geologists and geotechnical & environmental engineers.

Our geographical location enables us to service in particular the geotechnical and geological requirements of the Waikato, King Country and Coromandel areas, but with our past and present projects also extending from Kaitaia in the North and Gore to the South.  We have been involved with geotechnical investigation & design aspects of some great projects, such as the lahar protection embankment on Mt Ruapehu, 18-metre high retaining anchored retaining walls in Queenstown, hydro power schemes, dams, wind farm investigations, opencast coal mine and rock quarry developments, as well as foundation and slope stabilisation designs within widely different geological conditions.

Geocon Geotechnical owns and operates a readily-transportable, hydraulic-powered drilling rig which enables efficient and labour-saving soil testing to be carried out, with rapid retrieval of soil samples.  Hand-augering to collect soils samples is therefore limited to shallow bore holes only.   All of which together provides an excellent environment among staff who enjoy their working environment and after-work lifestyles.

Hamilton is a city that has great schools and with easy commuting.   It is in close proximity to both east and west coast beaches, and also to the Rotorua/Taupo Lakes and Central Plateau.

Housing costs are moderate with opportunities to live in a variety of situations, whether it is on a life-style block within easy commuting distance to the city, or close to some great schools, or near the Waikato University, all within a few minutes of our centrally located office location.

Staff live within 10 to 30 minutes from the office, even during rush hour.  If you do not live locally, then consider a move to Hamilton which will allow you to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, away from traffic congestion and be free to enjoy your after-work pastimes or sporting interests instead of languishing in a queue of traffic.
