The Role

Youth Horizons is looking for a practitioner/therapist to join our First Care team located in Hamilton. This role is based in Hamilton but will require regular travel around the Waikato region to support client needs.

First Care is a primary mental health early intervention for infants, children and their families/whānau. The practitioner will engage therapeutically with families, whānau, caregivers and/or other significant people involved in the care of the child or young person to support them to address the child or young person's mental health, emotional and/or behavioural issues and maximise their developmental potential.

We are seeking a professional who is enthusiastic about working as a family/whanau therapist with a small but intensive caseload of parents/caregivers of children aged 0-17, and children aged 8-17. Through this model, we want to improve the skill levels of parents and caregivers, retain young people in their existing placement and reduce antisocial and dysfunctional behaviour in children.

Comprehensive training in this evidence based model will be provided to the successful candidate.

About You

  • Previous experience working in child and adolescent mental health.
  • Bachelors/Master's degree in psychology, psychotherapy, social work, or other related mental health field.
  • Registered health professional under the HPCA Act or Social Work registration.
  • Experience in using motivational strategies, cognitive-behavioural strategies and strength based approaches with youth.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with peers and stakeholders.
  • Be culturally aware and willing to be a part of a bi-cultural journey.
  • Have a full and clean New Zealand driver's licence.
