Driven by strong social justice values one of The Salvation Army's exciting programmes is Community Finance; an ethical service providing low-interest and no-interest loans to people on limited incomes.

This position involves working closely with clients who will come into the Salvation Army centres at Newtown (three days per week), Porirua (one day per week) and Lower Hutt (one day per week).

On a daily basis the role involves:

  • promoting the NILS and StepUP loan services
  • handling enquiries
  • conducting financial conversations with clients
  • processing loan applications
  • overseeing the repayment of loans.

Key skills required for the role include:

  • a strong financial aptitude, and the ability to provide sound money management information
  • knowledge of microfinance or experience providing social development services will be helpful
  • ideally candidates will have an understanding of lending processes and loan assessment
  • an ability to build rapport and empathise with clients from diverse backgrounds and complex needs
  • highly developed communication skills, both written and verbal
  • appreciation for the needs of people on limited income, and a strong desire to improve the social and economic wellbeing of these people
  • an ability to work autonomously, in a role that is based at different sites throughout Wellington.
