Te Tai Tokerau, Northland, Permanent, Full time

The wellbeing of tamariki is everyone’s responsibility. They deserve to feel safe, have their voices heard and be surrounded by loving whānau and community.

If these words capture why you became a Social Worker, then you belong on the journey we’ve just begun at Oranga Tamariki. We’re looking for qualified and registered social workers who want to make a difference by putting children at the heart of everything they do.

Come and join our child protection team. We are open to applications from new social work graduates and experienced practitioners.

We are looking for you to come and help us deliver better outcomes for our tamariki and rangatahi.  As part of our team you will spend your day meeting with children and young people, listening to what they have to say, completing assessments, creating plans, participating in hui-a-whanau, family group conferences and partnering with other agencies, community groups and iwi to improve lives.

Getting the best for our children and young people is not an easy job, but when you see the positive difference you can make – it is worth it.

Benefits and rewards:

  • a salary range between $46,867 to $72,301(based on your skills and experience)
  • a challenging, fascinating and rewarding career
  • on-going training and regular supervision
  • a bi-cultural practice approach
  • the opportunity to change lives.

The skills and attributes we look for include:

  • listening skills – hear what the child or young person has to say
  • proven ability to quickly build rapport with tamariki and rangatahi
  • critical thinking – you know how to gather information and make good evidence based decisions
  • great written and verbal communication skills (you will need to write court reports)
  • a commitment to bi-cultural practice and a culturally responsive approach (a good understanding of Tikanga Maori and the bicultural principles of Te Toka Tumoana is essential)
  • resilient, motivated and caring nature
  • flexibility to work an afterhours duty roster as required
  • good computer navigation and typing skills
  • full clean valid driver's licence
  • must hold Social Work Qualification of Level 7 or above
  • New Zealand Citizenship or Permanent Resident status at the time of application.

Preference is given to those who have provisional or full registration with the New Zealand Social Work Registration Board. If you have lodged your registration with the board and are waiting to hear back – please tell us in your application.
