Exciting Opportunity! Okeanos is looking for a Ship’s Master for their Vaka fleet.

The Okeanos Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports Pacific island states in their efforts to operate and also to build fossil-fuel free traditional sailing canoes (vakas) for their daily passenger and cargo transportation needs, culturally based education and research.
 

Overall responsibilities

The Ship’s Master is responsible for delivering sailing training to Vaka crews in the Okeanos Maritime Training Centre in Auckland as well as in the Pacific Islands.

On the Vaka, the Ship’s Master is responsible for the safe operation, navigation and control of the vessel and for the safety and well-being of all personnel including guests / trainees / volunteers / crew. The Ship’s Master has overall responsibility for the activities of the crew.

Responsibilities include

  • Facilitating of classroom training of the Okeanos Seamanship Course for Okeanos Crew
  • Continuous improvement of the training material
  • Facilitating of practical sailing training on the Vaka
  • Ensure compliance with the Vaka Safety Manual
  • Inspection of all safety equipment, making sure that all safety equipment is up to date and the inventory is updated
  • Completion and submission of logbooks including maintenance and trip reports
  • Implementation and recording of all safety and emergency procedures prior to and during a voyage as appropriate
  • Taking any action necessary during an emergency or incident and notify the Owner’s Representative of those actions and emergency situation
  • Reporting all accidents, incidents and mishaps resulting in serious harm to the Owner’s Representative
  • Obtaining permits for ports of call, Vaka clearance and filing float plans
  • Other duties and responsibilities as directed within the skills and abilities of the individual

Essential experience

  • Experience in offshore sailing within the Pacific region as captain
  • Experience in offshore sailing of traditionally built Polynesian canoes 

Position requirements

  • RYA Offshore Captains License
  • RYA Instructor Certificate
  • Drivers license class 1

This position is based in Auckland with accommodation provided if needed, however, requires frequent travel to the Pacific Islands for either crew training or Vaka deliveries.
