Position overview

The Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST) are located at Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) near Coonabarabran, NSW. Siding Spring Observatory is home to Australia’s largest optical observatory, supporting research for The Australian National University’s Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA), consortium members of the AAT, and several national and international telescopes.

Forming part of the Anglo-Australian Telescope team (AAT team) from 1 July 2018, the AAT team will support the operations of the telescope, assisting observers from across the globe to undertake world-leading research. The Mechanical Technician reports to the Mechanical Manager and provides specialist mechanical support for equipment and scientific instruments to support the AAT. The Mechanical Technician will directly support high-quality research by the design, development, installation and maintenance of experimental equipment and apparatus for astronomical research.

Working as part of a small team the Mechanical Technician will provide fault finding, repair and maintenance on a broad range of specialised mechanical equipment and scientific instruments for the telescope. The Mechanical Technician will fabricate, modify, diagnose, repair, operate and test unique scientific components, equipment and infrastructure using specialised mechanical equipment and innovative techniques.
