About the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research is Australia's oldest medical research institute. Based in the heart of Melbourne's biomedical precinct in Parkville, the Institute has more than 800 researchers who are working to understand, prevent and treat diseases including cancer, infectious diseases and immune disorders. More than 100 national and international clinical trials are underway based on research undertaken at the Institute.
About the position
Working closely with the Head of Bioservices, the Veterinary Welfare Officer will assist in planning programmes of clinical and emergency animal care, have oversight of husbandry and breeding practices, animal health monitoring and the continuous improvement of strategies for animal welfare.
This role will involve contributing to a high-quality Programme of Veterinary Care at the institute through the provision of clinical and technical advice, participating in training and education programs and ensuring compliance.
Selection Criteria
To be considered for this position, you will possess a degree in Veterinary Science, have eligibility for registration in Victoria and have several years post graduate work experience in clinical practice or animals in research.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated commitment to animal welfare, have significant knowledge of the regulatory instruments relevant to animals in research and experience in applications of research in laboratory animal science.
An ability to develop and deliver training programmes to a range of audiences, and communicate effectively and build rapport, will be required to perform successfully in this role.
Please note that this position will require travel between institute campuses and attending facilities out of hours when required. An unrestricted driver’s licence will be highly regarded.
Terms of appointment
The position is available for a period of 2 years in the first instance. Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
