CLIENT
Our client is the Department of Defence. The Explosives and Pyrotechnics (EP) group develops the necessary science and technology (S&T) on which energetic materials and Explosive Ordnance (EO) are based.
The branch develops and sustains interdependent facilities and capabilities, complemented by access to remote trials facilities.
Chemistry, physics and engineering (experimental and computational) are utilised to: develop and characterise ingredients and formulations; investigate initiation and detonation phenomena; optimise performance, understand safety, ageing, exploitation and environmental issues; and manufacture, research, and prototype charges, EO, and devices.
ROLE
Based in Edinburgh, Adelaide, this is a full-time position (working an average of 37.5 hours per week). The initial contract duration is until 30 June 2019, which is shall be for 44 weeks' work, and subsequently provides options for 2x one-year extensions (each will allow for up to 48 weeks' full-time work).
The successful candidate will provide technical support for the development of advanced additive manufacturing techniques for pyrotechnic systems. You will perform routine laboratory duties and basic upkeep of facilities as part of the EP group.
Some of the duties associated with this role include:
- Under direction, set-up test equipment for laboratory and field testing activities
- General upkeep of test and laboratory facilities
- Prepare risk assessments and standard operating procedures for facilities and processes
- Liaise with workshop staff as required to prepare hardware and materials for testing
- Under direction, assist with the manufacture of formulations and associated materials preparation and analysis
- Under direction characterise pyrotechnic formulations for their chemical, sensitiveness and mechanical properties
- Under direction obtain quotes for laboratory supplies or other consumables and administer through the Defence procurement process
- Data analysis
SELECTION CRITERIA
To be successful in your application you must meet the following criteria:
- Must be an Australian Citizen—this is an absolute requirement
- Tertiary qualifications—Diploma or Degree ideally in chemistry, engineering, materials science or physics
- Oral and written communication skills of a high standard
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a small team, liaise and communicate effectively
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the safe handling of hazardous chemicals
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to WHS in technical laboratories and/or field trials
- Must be willing to undergo and obtain a SECRET clearance
- If you are not based in Adelaide, you must be willing to relocate there at your own expense
